Question: Where is the safest location for my child restraint?
Answer: Crash data show that children are generally safer in the middle of the rear seat.
Question: Do I need a locking clip?
Answer: No, you do not need a locking clip if your vehicle is model year 1986 or newer. If your vehicle is older than model year 1986, please call SafeGuard Customer Service at 1-800-586-7839. Refer to the SafeGuard Go instruction manual for information on how to install the seat using the vehicle seat belts.
Question: What is the LATCH system?
Answer: LATCH (Lower Anchors and Tethers for Children) is a system to install child seats in a vehicle without using the vehicle safety belts. It's now a federal requirement that all vehicles and most child restraints manufactured after September 1, 2002 are equipped with LATCH. Some vehicle manufacturers implemented LATCH earlier, so check your owner's manual.
Question: What is a top tether strap, and when should it be used?
Answer: The top tether must be used with the SafeGuard Go when the 5-point harness is used. The tether strap is located on the top of the SafeGuard Go and connects to an anchor point in the rear of the vehicle (please see the vehicle owners manual for location details). The top tether secures the 5-point harness to the vehicle and helps prevent forward movement of the child restraint in the event of a collision.
Question: Can I use LATCH in the center position of my vehicle seat?
Answer: Please reference the vehicle owner's manual for the vehicle manufacturer's recommendations. As long as the vehicle manufacturer states that it is a LATCH approved position, and the spacing between the lower anchors is 11 - 20 inches apart, you may install the SafeGuard Go in the center.
Question: I can't find the tether anchors in my car? Am I looking in the right place?
Answer: Tether anchors can be located in different areas depending on the vehicle. Common locations are in the rear parcel shelf area, on the interior roof, and behind the seat on the floor. Be careful not to confuse the tether anchors with cargo tie down locations. Reference the vehicle owner's manual for specific tether anchor locations and details. Older vehicles may not have these anchors, but most can be retrofitted at no cost. Contact the vehicle manufacturer or a dealership for details.
Question: How do I know if the SafeGuard Go is installed securely?
Answer: The SafeGuard Go shouldn't move more than 1 inch when pulled side to side or front to back (hands are to be positioned near the belt path), and the top tether should have no slack when pulled. Always make sure the child restraint is secure before each trip. If you're unable to get a tight installation, please visit a local child seat fitting station for assistance. To locate a fitting station, please contact the National Highway and Traffic Safety Administration's auto safety hotline at 1-888-DASH-2-DOT or call SafeGuard Customer Service at 1-800-586-7839.
Question: Will the SafeGuard Go fit in my car?
Answer: We installed the SafeGuard Go in the most widely used and popular vehicles in the country. For a list of vehicles in which we have installed the SafeGuard Go, please contact SafeGuard Customer Service at 1-800-586-7839 or refer to our vehicle compatibility guide.
Question: Can my child wear bulky clothing and still use the SafeGuard Go?
Answer: During the cold months this is hard to avoid. However heavy coats can keep the harness from fitting the child properly, so make sure the harness lies in a relatively straight line without sagging. It should not press on the child's flesh or push the body into an unnatural position.
Question: Should I check my vehicle owner's manual before installing the seat?
Answer: It's very important to make sure the vehicle manufacturer doesn't have restrictions or recommendations. Always compare the SafeGuard Go manual to the vehicle manual. In the case of a discrepancy, call SafeGuard Customer Service at 1-800-586-7839.
Question: What if the vehicle headrest interferes with the SafeGuard Go?
Answer: Route the tether strap under the vehicle headrest and secure to the tether anchor. If the headrest cannot be raised or is integrated into the vehicle seat, the tether may be routed either around or over the headrest. The child's head must be supported (top of child's ears must be below top of the vehicle headrest) in order to use the SafeGuard Go. Call SafeGuard Customer Service with any questions at 1-800-586-7839.
Question: Are there any vehicles in which I should not install the SafeGuard Go?
Answer: Never install the SafeGuard Go in a side facing seat, a boat, or an RV. It should only be installed on a forward facing seat with a lap belt, lap-shoulder belt, or using the LATCH attachments. Always use the top tether in harness mode.
